Happy Earth Initiatives

Afforestation

The goal of sustainable growth for Hero MotoCorp is intrinsically connected with its social responsibility initiatives. We believe that business organizations are organic entities. They cannot grow and sustain unless their relationship with communities deepen. In the larger sense, potentially every business entity can play a role in helping to resolve the multifarious issues and challenges that the country faces.

Planting, replanting and ensuring the survival of trees makes our project sustainable. We are continuously monitoring and facilitating our partners to make sure of more than a 90 per cent survival. Till date, we have planted more than 2.55 lakh trees.

Few distinct events are

• The Green Drive - This initiative was launched in Delhi NCR with an aim to plant and maintain trees at parks of Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Tilpath Valley (Delhi). We partnered with DDA and Times of India to plant more than 120,000 trees in August 2015. This Drive mobilized nearly 40,000 people including students of various schools, political and religious leaders, as well as citizens of Delhi. To ensure the survival of saplings, we work along with relevant organizations/individuals and volunteers.

Presenting the Hero Green Drive 2.0

We recently achieved a historic production milestone by rolling out our 70-millionth (7 crore) two-wheeler. To celebrate this memorable feat, we have planted 70,000 saplings at three locations (Tughlakabad, Tilpath Valley and Neela Hauz) in Delhi.

• Fruit Trees Plantation - We frequently organize green drives focused on planting fruit bearing trees at various locations in Delhi-NCR and Uttarakhand. To involve more communities in this noble cause, we also conduct tree plantation initiatives in orphanages, old-age homes, government schools and other public places. We have already planted almost 57,000 fruit trees. These trees are expected to bear fruits for the next 40-50 years and these fruits will be available to local communities for free.

• Increasing Green Cover - Till date, more than 7,000 trees have been planted at different locations in India. We have continued this process on a monthly basis, adding nearly 500 trees to spread our green cover. In addition, Hero employees across India are encouraged to plant trees in and around our facilities.

Sanitation & Hygiene

As much as the Earth is getting affected by the urbanization and industrial processes, its beauty is equally getting impacted by filthy or non-existent sanitation facilities. Also, unawareness among communities about basic hygiene for better health is also a reason for the lack of focus on sanitation. With an aim to do our bit towards supporting Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan, we are committed to build sanitation infrastructure, especially toilets for government school children around our areas of operations.

Over 500 toilets have already been handed over across various schools in Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra. The special awareness drives and interaction programmes on how and why to maintain basic hygiene are regularly conducted with the schools. One of the aims of the Happy Earth initiative is to ensure that communities benefit the most from our social initiatives and lead a greener, cleaner and healthier life.

Water Conservation and Drinking Water Facility

• Drinking water facilities - We have installed RO water treatment plant at a village in Haryana, benefitting around 100 families while another water purification system installed in a school at Nagpur benefits around 500 students. In the years to come, similar facilities will be created in many other areas of our operation to ensure that the Right to Drinking Water is being practiced by maximum people.

• Restoration of Natural Water Resources - Under the scheme of Mukhyamantri Jal Swavlamban Yojana, we excavated an existing pond in Neemrana, Rajasthan and increased its water holding capacity by 60 Thousand litres.

Interestingly, several hundred trucks full of fertile soil removed during restoration process were given to farmers of the nearby village. The fertility of the soil will help reduce consumption of fertilizers in the village, helping farmers economically.

• Support to Namami Gange - A series of awareness sessions and campaigns on cleaning and rejuvenating the River Ganga were organized to support the government’s Namami Gange project. Thousands of school children were encouraged to participate in the Clean Ganga Mission.

To further create awareness about the significance of clean rivers, cycle rallies, tree plantation drives, waste management programs and musical events were also conducted.

Awareness Campaign

Each Hero employee has taken the CSR pledge to be environmentally conscious and also encourage green and sustainable lifestyle among their families and friends. Additionally, through our portal, blogs, social media and commercial literature, we ensure that messages focusing on conservation of natural resources and adopting a sustainable lifestyle are spread among the masses.
